The Galaxy Class was meant to replace the Ambassador Class ships that had served for several decades in exploration roles to keep up with the Klingons, Romulans, Daltari, and Cardassians. While initial approval of the project began in 2343, various delays meant that the first ship would not be launched until 2357 and commissioned in 2362. A sister class, the Nebula, was designed using the same components to reduce cost and to replace the aging Miranda Class ships as front-line cruisers and science vessels. The ships were capable explorers and fighters, and in 2370, the USS Andromeda was launched.Interiors

Hydroponics Bays
There are 8 hydroponics bays in the saucer section to provide fresh food to the crew for a variety of cuisines. Replication systems are available, but most crew prefer the organically grown food that will survive in case of power failures to the rest of the ships' systems thanks to local battery packs. Salad greens, vegetables, and fruits from Earth and a number of other planets are grown on the ship to provide food for the crew around the clock.Battle Bridge
